For the third consecutive year, interior designer Nancy Robinson will be pulling on her running shoes to raise money for desperately needed school shoes for girls in sub-Saharan Africa.
Last year Nancy raised more than £4,000 for Camfed by taking part in the British 10k London Run. Her efforts alone provided more than 520 girls with shoes so that they are able to go to school.
The cost of a pair of shoes is beyond the reach of many families in the rural areas where Camfed works. Girls often have to walk long distances to their nearest school, so when a girl’s family cannot afford them, it effectively denies her the chance of an education.
Nancy’s support for Camfed’s work is inspired directly by her own experiences growing up in Singapore.
“When I found the race difficult, I was spurred on by the thought of the young women I would be helping in Africa.”“To get to school, I had to walk three or four miles in canvas shoes each day crossing canals and agricultural fields,” says Nancy, who now lives in Kingston Upon Thames in Surrey. “I came from a family of nine girls. My father believed strongly in the value of girls’ education and made sure we all went to school.”
Nancy was just one of a team of Camfed runners who ran 10 kilometers past some of London’s top attractions this year and helped to raise enough money to set more than 1,000 girls on the path to success.
Says Nancy: “When I found the race difficult, I was spurred on by the thought of the young women I would be helping in Africa.”
